Stepping Stones Scholarships
are loan scholarships. In disbursing them
the Foundation is not in competition with
banks. It will focus on brilliant students
who, for whatever reason, cannot get financial
support including bank loans.

(Students
at the Higher Secondary School or pre-university
level, for example, rarely get bank loans
for regular studies or for coaching for
competitive examinations.) But the main
difference is that the obligation to repay
the loan is moral, not legal.
The Foundation celebrates human goodness
and the joy of sharing. The loan is given
in the spirit of lending a helping hand
to bright young people in need. Each awardee
undertakes to donate to the Foundation enough
money to support at least one other student
financially through a critical stage. Such
repayment – in fact donation –
is due only after the awardee has a regular
source of income. This repayment is to ensure
that more and more needy students can get
the benefit of loan scholarships administered
by the Foundation.
Stepping Stones Scholarships are competitive.
Candidates have to compete with one another
for the limited scholarships. This is because
the award of Stepping Stones scholarship
is a recognition of achievement and of potential,
not just need. These scholarships are open
to Indians of all castes, creeds, religions,
and regions. |
